
Stakeholder conference on the sustainable development of the blue economy in the western Mediterranean
Barcelona, 2 February 2017.
The European Commission and the Union for the Mediterranean are glad to announce the “Stakeholder conference on the sustainable development of the blue economy in the western Mediterranean“, which will take place on Thursday 2 February 2017 in Barcelona, Spain.
The event is organized by the European Commission in close cooperation with the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean and aims to promote an exchange of views among stakeholders operating in the maritime sector, namely businesses, researchers, institutes, national and local authorities belonging to the Western Mediterranean Countries (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania).
The outcomes of the conference will be used to complete the assessment of the feasibility and added value of a possible sea-basin based initiative for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the western Mediterranean.

6th Meeting of the Water Expert Group

The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfMS) is pleased to announce the Sixth Meeting of the Water Expert Group (WEG), scheduled to take place on 20 December 2016 in Brussels.
The Meeting is of paramount importance as a step towards the UfM Ministerial Meeting on Water which is to be held in Malta in 2017.
The 6th WEG Meeting will contribute to the consultation towards a draft ministerial declaration, integrating and expanding contents of the UfM regional water agenda.

UfM regional meeting on higher education internationalisation and academic mobility in the Euro-Mediterranean area
UfM Secretariat, Barcelona, 15 December 2016.
The UfM Secretariat will host the UfM regional meeting on higher education internationalisation and academic mobility in the Euro-Mediterranean area on 15 December 2016 in UfM Secretariat in Barcelona.
The meeting will bring together representatives from UfM Member States, the European Union and key relevant actors and stakeholders with the objective of strengthening cooperation and synergies on this evolving issue in view of amplifying quality partnerships between educational institutions throughout the Mediterranean and enhancing further North-South, South-North as well as South-South academic mobility, at a time when the need for mutual understanding and youth opportunities has never been so pressing in the region.
OBJECTIVES OF THE MEETING- Improving shared knowledge and understanding of internationalisation trends and policies in the region as well as of current mobility flows and available funding schemes.
- Facilitating continuous peer learning among UfM countries on policies and practices addressing common challenges and priorities, such as intra-regional mobility, recognition of qualifications, quality assurance, brain circulation, as well as more recent issues related to migrant and refugee students and to the privatisation trends in cross-border education.
- Fostering the implementation of joint projects and initiatives and shape a regional strategy on higher education internationalisation and academic mobility in the Euro-Mediterranean area reinforcing regional integration.
This first meeting will result in sketching an overview of the situation in the region; agreeing on regional needs and priority topics of common interest; promoting successful initiatives; reinforcing the involvement of UfM countries in related UfM labelled projects; and adopting a methodology for further cooperation. It will lead to the preparation of an UfM regional dialogue process on these issues.

ENA Seminar
Barcelona, 12-15 December 2016.
The 8th Information and Training Seminar for Euro-Mediterranean Diplomats will take place at the Union for the Mediterranean Secretariat in Barcelona.
On June 28th 2016, the publication of the global strategy of the European Union on foreign affairs and security by Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has redefined the Union’s priorities towards its neighbourhood. Numerous changes are at stake regarding the regional cooperation issues with Southern and Eastern countries of the Mediterranean and the EU. A more pragmatic approach, based on a dynamics of projects and partnerships, is highly reinforced and needed. In this regard, a special attention will be dedicated to the role of the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), especially in the following areas: inclusive growth and youth employability, the place of women in society and business, and finally the Euro-Mediterranean higher education and research area.
A simulation exercise of a EU Council working group will be organised. Its purpose is to highlight the importance of dialogue between EU Member States and the quest for compromise during EU negotiations.
Speakers from the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean, EU institutions, EU Member States and also from Southern neighbouring countries will attend this seminar and foster dialogue and interaction amongst participants.

UfM Senior Officials Meeting (SOM)
Barcelona, 5 December 2016.
The members of the Union for the Mediterranean meet on a regular basis at the level of Senior Officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the 43 UfM countries, EU institutions and the League of Arab States.
The Senior Officials Meetings (SOM) provide the framework to discuss the current political context and coordinate the work of the UfM Secretariat. They approve the budget and work programme of the Secretariat and set the basis to prepare the Ministerial Meetings. They also discuss the project proposals submitted for approval and endorsement. The Senior Officials take decisions by consensus.

2nd Regional Conference of the UfM labelled project Governance & Financing for the Mediterranean Water Sector / UfM Workshop on the PRPI

The 2nd Regional Conference of the UfM labelled project Governance & Financing for the Mediterranean Water Sector will be co-organised by the Union for the Mediterranean on 5-6 December in Tunis, Tunisia. Moreover, the UfM Workshop on the PRPI will be held in the same dates.
About the project“Governance & Financing for the Mediterranean Water Sector” aims to deliver a set of country analysis and a regional action plan to improve the public governance and attract investments to the water sector of the Mediterranean region.
“Governance & Financing for the Mediterranean Water sector” is a joint undertaking of the Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean (GWP-Med) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

UfM Ministerial Meeting on Energy
Rome, 1 December 2016.
The UfM Ministerial Meeting on Energy will be held in Rome on 1 December and will be hosted by Italy’s Foreign Affairs Minister Paolo Gentiloni and Economic Development Minister Carlo Calenda. The 43 members of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) agreed to step up regional cooperation on energy in order to deliver a secure, affordable and sustainable energy supply, a major factor for stability and shared prosperity in the Mediterranean region.
At the meeting, co-chaired by the European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, and the Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ibrahim Saif, the ministers will agree that policy dialogue and concrete initiatives will be carried out under the three UfM Energy Platforms: the UfM Regional Electricity Market Platform (UfM REM Platform), the UfM Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Platform (UfM REEE Platform) and the UfM Gas Platform.
The UfM Energy Platforms are flexible and effective structures which, under the coordination of the UfM Co-Presidency, organise and support systematic dialogue among UfM Members, financial institutions, regional organisations, industrial enterprises and experts.

Mediterranean Week of Economic Leaders – 10th Edition

The Mediterranean region is experiencing a wide range of far-reaching social, political and economic transformations and growing economic potentialities. Despite its many economic opportunities, the Mediterranean has a lot still to overcome. Some economic, social and environmental challenges are more relevant and urgent than ever before.
To overcome these development obstacles and build a shared and sustainable future for all the region’s people, an increasingly clear action and commitments is required from businesses in partnership with the public sector and civil society.
Under the slogan “A need for action” the 10th MedaWeek edition will offer a unique platform to explore the business opportunities of competitive industries, which generate productive and sustainable employment and are considered as drivers for economic growth and regional development.
